The Sacramento Kings are confident that they can finally break their 15-year postseason drought in the 2021-22 NBA season. They’ve made strides in the right way in recent years, especially with their draft choices of Tyrese Haliburton in 2020 and Davion Mitchell in 2021. While Sacramento continues to maintain consistency with its existing squad, the emergence of D’Aaron Fox as a true star and his continuous development should only help the club.
Making the playoffs in the Western Conference, on the other hand, is more difficult than it seems. The West is as stacked as it has ever been, and it’s difficult to see any of the teams from last year’s playoffs entirely breaking apart. If anything, some of them will undoubtedly be the teams the Kings must beat in order to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
With that in mind, a lot of things must go Sacramento’s way if they are to have a competitive season. Here are five major concerns for the Sacramento Kings in the upcoming NBA season of 2021-22.
Questions for the Sacramento Kings in the NBA season 2021-22
1. What is the name of the fifth starter?
On opening night, head coach Luke Walton is unclear about the five-man unit he’ll use in the starting lineup. Will Tyrese Haliburton earn the starting job after a successful rookie season? Will Buddy Hield continue to shoot threes early in the game or will he do so after coming off the bench? Will Marvin Bagley keep his starting job after two seasons marred by injuries?
Luke Walton has a plethora of alternatives in front of him. He may start Hield and Haliburton small, while moving Harrison Barnes to the four and Bagley on the bench. The Kings would get more space as a result, but their lack of size up front would be a disadvantage. Walton could also take the typical way and start Holmes and Bagley together, with Barnes dropping to the three and Hield or Haliburton beginning in the back court with De’Aaron Fox.
Is he completely committed to starting Haliburton over Hield if he does go small? This season, Walton seems to be making that shift. While Hield has said that he would do everything it takes to help the Kings win, he is not a fan of coming off the bench. Which brings us to the second question.
2. Will Buddy Hield remain in his current position?
Buddy Hield’s name has come up in a number of trade rumors over the previous several seasons. In fact, the 28-year-old was on the verge of departing Sacramento this summer when a deal to send him to the Los Angeles Lakers almost fell through. Regardless, Hield will wear a Kings jersey when the team opens the season against the Portland Trail Blazers on the road on October 20th.
Will Hield take a reserve position if Walton sticks with Haliburton as his starter, as mentioned in the preceding section? Due to his outstanding marksmanship from beyond the arc, he’ll continue to receive plenty of playing time. Will he like coming off the bench for the Sacramento Kings, though? If that converts to victories, any difficulties he has with not starting should be resolved. He may even succeed as a contender for Sixth Man of the Year.
3. Will Marvin Bagley be able to remain healthy for the foreseeable future?
In his NBA career, Marvin Bagley has only appeared in 118 of a possible 226 games. He played the most games in a season during his first season, when he made 62 appearances. Bagley had a fantastic first season, earning All-Rookie First Team accolades. However, it seems like the 2018 No. 2 overall choice has plateaued since then, owing to his inability to remain on the court regularly.
Bagley’s ability is undeniable. He has shown the ability to be a talented, multi-skilled big man who may succeed in today’s NBA. The lefty has a strong inside game and can can spread the floor with his shooting ability. Unfortunately, his injury history has many wondering whether he can still be a standout in this league. Will this be the year he finally breaks through and remains healthy throughout the campaign? As they seek to make a playoff run, the Kings surely hope so.
4. How significant will Davion Mitchell’s involvement be?
In the 2021 NBA Draft, the Kings picked Davion Mitchell with the 9th overall selection. His presence merely adds to Sacramento’s expanding backcourt rotation, particularly after they drafted Tyrese Haliburton the year before. Many draft observers raised their eyebrows when the Kings selected this player.
Nonetheless, it’s understandable why the Sacramento Kings selected Mitchell when he became available. Though he improved as an attacking player in his junior year, he is a defensive force to be reckoned with. His Baylor teammates dubbed him “Bad Night” because he would call whomever was assigned to him on defense a “off night.” Mitchell’s meal ticket to NBA stardom might very well be this. But how quickly will he be able to make a name for himself in the league? Is he capable of landing a key role in Luke Walton? Will Mitchell’s defense be sufficient to keep him on the court for extended periods of time? We’ll find out soon enough.
5. Will the Sacramento Kings be able to crack the code?
The Kings have a really skilled collection of players. De’Aaron Fox is an amazing talent who is more than capable of guiding a club to the playoffs. Luke Walton is a solid coach with a terrific system who is well-liked around the league. Harrison Barnes, Buddy Hield, Richaun Holmes, and Tristan Thompson are among the team’s good veterans, while Tyrese Haliburton and Davion Mitchell are young potential guards.
This club, as it currently stands, should be able to compete for a postseason berth. However, skill alone will not be enough to help them end their 15-year playoff skid. They must unite and, above all, play consistently winning basketball. Is it possible for the Kings to do that this season and be in contention for a playoff berth?
